Bangalore schools to impart lessons on Facebook, Twitter

Schools have begun to train students on the ground rules while using such sites. Wellness curriculum is the new subject on school timetables, and entails lessons on Facebook and Twitter. Cyber bullying , sexual predators, online privacy and sensitizing kids about social media leading to crime are some of the topics covered in such sessions.

“We tell children about how to use networking sites responsibly, how to communicate personal information, and crime that arises out of immature handling of these sites. Children are easy prey to cyber bullies too. We tell them how these sites could prove more dangerous than pornography,” says Sarojini Rao, principal, Indus International School.

Schools say that cases related to cyber crime and social networking sites prompted them to educate kids about the dangers of social media. Apart from sensitizing children, schools have also gathered dramatized video clips of cyber crime. “We have a collection of videos which we show these kids as case studies and tell them how the particular circumstances could have been avoided,” says Sarojini.
